Brief introduction:
Edelény is situated one of the luckiest point of the Borsod region, in the hasty widening valley of Bódva river, 25 kilometres from Miskolc. It's the trade and spiritual-cultural centre of the region, the population is nearly 11 thousand. The town came into existence by gathering of three settlements. In 1950 Borsod, the settlement after the country was named, and in 1963 Finke were joined to Edelény, and gained town status in1986.
The beautiful “valley corridor” of Bódva in the past was “path of wars”, and trade route in peaceful times. In ancient times the castle of Borsod guarded the Bódva creek, Edelény commanded the bridges of Bódva, but the first mention in a charter happened only in 1299.
The economic structure of the town had been determined by the coal mining and agriculture for long decades. The mines were closed in August of 1995, its agriculture is characterized by producing grape and fruits to one's own self instead of large-scale production.
The main road to the world famous caves of the Aggtelek National Park leads through the town.
The Cserehát with its small villages, and pure rural mood, hiding east among the gentle slopes, belongs to the town's surroundings, and in West still less known romantic Galyaság.
The frontier stations of Tornanádaska and Aggtelek provide the traffic toward Slovakia.
